How can I start my own Blog? What types of Blogging (software) is there?

Before you can start blogging you need to set up your own blog. However before we dive in exactly how to set your own blog up lets look at what’s on offer?

For beginners, people new to the Internet and people who just want to dive straight in I would suggest opting for a solution that requires as little work as possible for both setting up and maintaining.

Blogger.com is probably most well known for its brand as well as its ease of use. One of the best options is the fact that it’s free for both using their service and even for hosting it. Hosting with them is not a bad idea if your not used to running your own website already. However they do put adverts sometimes as a way for contributing to your hosting costs which is a fair deal. Though if your are a dab hand with the old FTP settings (and you have your own hosting) then Blogger.com offers a superb facility for publishing your blog on your own hosting. That way you only have the adverts you want.

Another useful way is going to a paid blogging service. All the blogging sites I have listed below provide the full works in terms of hosting and blogging facilities, so there’s no need to worry about anything.

Squarespace: It’s a brilliant looking service that has many cool looking templates and features. There is no third party software and price start from $7 to $17 per month* I do like the look of it and would recommend the middle option at $12 per month. This is on the basis that you can have domain mapping. Domain mapping means if you own a domain name i.e. thisismyblog.com you can point it to your Squarespace account. Therefore your visitors can type http://www.thisismyblog.com/article39.html instead of http://thisismyblog.squarespace.com/article39.html.

TypePad: Big company, cool style and good price. Publishing wise you get a whole host of features like podcasting & video support, category and date archiving, and photo albums. I would even recommend the basic package as it would get any new blogger well on there way at $4.95 per month. The next package up provides a few extra features included the domain mapping that we spoke about earlier.

The most important thing about choosing for a paid service is to know you feel comfortable with it. That’s why if you choose either one you’ll get a free trial with them just so that can to grips with them or not. As a new blogger you may well need a helping hand so have a look at their manuals and support pages:
You can view Squarespace’s “How to blog” information by clicking here.

TypePad have there whole manual online ready to view. Click here to see if it’s something you feel you can work with.

Also check out their screen shots, see if you like them? Because you will be seeing a lot their site if your going to be blogging with them.

I hope this helps you start your blog site and let me know how you get on. If you have any suggestions i.e. new blogging sites, or you have had a good/bad experience with a site please e-mail me or leave a comment.

What is a Blog? And what Is Blogging?

Let’s start straight off by trying to define these two statements:

A Blog “is a web page made up of usually short, frequently updated posts that are arranged chronologically—like a what’s new page or a journal. The content and purposes of blogs varies greatly—from links and commentary about other web sites, to news about a company/person/idea, to diaries, photos, poetry, mini-essays, project updates, even fiction.” (Source unknown).”

Blogging is the act of contributing to a blog. To explain futher and to get a context of the meaning here is an example of when and how you could use the term blogging:

“Recently I have been blogging about my football team”.

As you can see a blog and blogging are simple concepts that can be as personal or corporate as you want. It is for these reasons why so many people enjoy and take part in building their own blogs.

Now the answer is do you want to be part of it? If the answer is yes and you want to find out how to start your own blog then follow on.

My tooth is still killing and my face is swelling…

I’ve been trying to sleep most of today due to lack of sleep last night! The pain has been killing. I can’t believe I’ve got tooth ache. Never in my life have I had it before and I really didn’t need it right now. Starting a new job and stuff and I need all the exposure I can get. I’m taking antibiotics which should make the swelling go down and hopefully I can get Kelly to persuade her dentist to see me on a Saturday to take a closer look as to why and what should happen next. At the moment he says he can’t do anything because it’s flared up so much. STUPID f-ing teeth.

It looks like pain killers for the next few days and antibiotics for the next 5 :(

This toothache is killing me….

My word I have never had toothache before. Luckily I had 4 teeth out when I was young. However I got a funny feeling the wisdom teeth are kicking in. Well one of them anyway. Alex has passed me some pills so I hope they do the business. I have phoned up Kelly (Dental Nurse) see if I can get some antibiotics for the swelling to calm down. I’m hoping this is just a reaction and not the kind of movemnt that suggests doing dental surgery.

The worse thing is I’ve got a tasty sandwhich looking at me ready to be eaten.

Birth first for Dutch Big Brother…

Shocking news from Dutch Big Brother. A woman has given birth live on Dutch television. It also goes on about someone taking cocaine and then being interviewed about the experience. See the article here on the BBC website…

ITV trials broadband TV service in Brighton & Hastings

Broadband users in the Hastings and Brighton area will have access to one of the UK’s leading terrestrial broadcasters as it launches it’s new TV service via the Internet. The service will allow people create their own schedules and broadcasts.

However one thing we found interesting at work was the live web cam pointing towards Brighton seafront. Now as Internet users we’ve all see web cams but this was streaming live and broadcasting at a high qaulity. David Coats not to miss a thing decided to be the first (as far as I know) on there, and got on his bike from the office to show how he can manage to do a Timmy Mallet cross Challenge Anneka style presentation via the web cam. It was funny as hell. Well done mate, maybe TV is the way to go?

I remember this….

Looking around Gibbo’s Ranting site called The Fourth Place I found this little number. Thought I would steal it and put it on my site as well. It’s a picture of Me on the left, with Sam and Becky to my right.

Gibbo titles the picture as “Local talent celbrates new Thompson local” and adds the comment “Local pornstar, artist and media honey gather to to celebrate the innovative new whitepages publication”. Thanks Gibbo that was a fun night!
